Life for deaf people in Afghanistan is difficult. Many consider deaf people to be mentally handicapped as they have a very strong way of expressing themselves to make themselves heard. Even their parents are often unable to communicate with them properly. Many can’t, some don’t want to. We have also heard of parents who see deafness as a punishment and forbid their children to use sign language. Because of this rejection or isolation, many behave like children and never fully grow up mentally. In our center for the deaf, we want to create a place of acceptance, where children learn to read, write and count, as well as sign language. We currently have 42 pupils and 20 adult students. Nine members of staff provide good supervision. It is important to us that the students learn together and not alone. In future, we also want to offer workshops for the children’s parents to help improve communication. We also hope to be able to offer training initiatives for adults in the future. Many do not find work after school and get “stuck” in the center. We would like to help create better opportunities for them. The intended use for this project is “6202”. Thank you very much for your support.
